President Zhang Jie had a meeting with Christophe Guy, Chief Executive Officer of École Polytechnique de Montréal (EPM), Gilles Savard, Dean of Research and Innovation, and Clément Fortin, President and CEO of CRIAQ on Minhang Campus the afternoon of September 2, 2011. The Signing Ceremony of EPM-SJTU Graduate Student Training Program was held. Present at the meeting were also Su Jianbo, Deputy Dean of Graduate School, Fu Yuzhuo, Deputy Dean of Microelectronics, Zhan Xingqun, Assistant to the Dean of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Guo Liang, Deputy Director of Division of International Cooperation and Exchange.
President Zhang Jie extended a warm welcome to Chief Executive Officer Christophe Guy for his second visit. Zhang pointed out that, the EPM-SJTU cooperation agreement signed in 2005 has been renewed to 2015. The Graduate Student Training Program signed this time is the substantive cooperation of both sides in the area of student exchange. Zhang Jie said, in the past few years, SJTU developed its Development Plan 2020, in which internationalization was listed among the university’s major development strategies. And the Chinese government has set up special scholarships for students who go to Canada for study, which is also an important initiative taken to promote exchanges of higher education between China and Canada.
Mr. Guy was very happy to have another opportunity to visit SJTU and appreciated President Zhang’s interview after taking time from the busy schedule. He mentioned that as an engineering college, EPM is among the best in Canada. EPM, similarly as SJTU, also attaches great importance to internationalization, and the ratio of international students admitted is 24% per year. Last year alone, among the graduate students, international students account for 49.2%. He said he would be more than welcome to have SJTU students study in EPM for exchange.
After the meeting, the delegation led by Chief Executive Officer Christophe Guy had a discussion in School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, where both sides showed their intention for closer cooperation, including joint lab, PhD candidate training program, etc.
EPM is the first institution of the North America to teach in French, and also one of the top engineering colleges in Canada.
